Dr. Ben Bauer is an Associate Professor of Small Ruminant and Camelid Medicine at the University of Calgary, Canada. He has a strong interest in infectious diseases and vaccine development in sheep, goats, and camelids. His research priorities focus on the prevention and control of Coxiella burnetii (Q fever), with an emphasis on an interdisciplinary One Health approach. This work includes novel diagnostic methods, sustainable vaccination strategies for ruminant herds, the development of a new vaccine candidate, and investigations into reservoir host–pathogen interactions.
In addition, he is involved in research projects on the epidemiology and control of Caseous Lymphadenitis (Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis) and Morel’s Disease (Staphylococcus aureus subsp. anaerobius) in small ruminant flocks in Germany, and in a dairy goat health project in Costa Rica.
